• Burak-ji Temple / 豊楽寺 — 10 min. The oldest surviving building in Shikoku (built ~1151 AD), and a National Treasure. The thatched-roof main hall has stood for 900 years. Inside: three Buddha statues carved from single cypress trunks — Yakushi Nyorai flanked by Amida and Shakyamuni. One of Japan’s three great Yakushi temples. Outer grounds: free. Inner sanctum viewing: ¥500, reservation required (tel: 0887-72-0827).

• Sugi-no-Osugi / 杉の大杉 — 20 min. Japan’s largest cedar — two trees (“North” and “South”) fused at the root, known as the Married Cedars. The South tree stands 60m tall with a 20m root girth. Estimated 3,000 years old. National Special Natural Monument. Legend says the storm god Susanoo planted it. Misora Hibari came here at age 9 after a bus accident and prayed to become Japan’s greatest singer — then did. Her memorial stone is beside the tree; press a button to hear her songs. ¥200 adults.

• Kajigamori / 梶が森 — 25 min. 1,400m summit reachable by car — but what draws people here is the sea of clouds filling the valleys at dawn, and a sky thick with stars at night. An observatory sits at 1,200m with a 60cm telescope (reservations required, ¥500 adults, from 20:00). Stone-and-water hiking trails pass Dragon King Falls (龍王の滝 — one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls) and a sacred cave where Kobo Daishi trained. 360° views of the Ishizuchi and Tsurugi ranges.

• Oboke Gorge Boat Tour / 大歩危峡遊覧船 — 20 min. A 30-min open boat ride through a gorge carved over 200 million years by the Yoshino River into crystalline schist rock — the stone literally sparkles. The name means “dangerous even with big steps, dangerous even with small steps.” No reservation needed; departs any time. ¥1,500 adults, ¥750 children (9:00–17:00, no fixed holidays, cancelled in high water or strong wind).

• Iyakei Gorge / 祖谷渓 — 25 min. A dramatic V-shaped valley with the Peeing Boy statue perched on a cliff edge above the river — a local test of courage. Free. / 25分。V字谷の断崖に立つ小便小僧像で有名。入場無料。
  • “Hi-no-ji” Gorge / ひの字渓谷 — A roadside viewpoint (no sign, easy to miss) where the Iya River bends into the shape of the hiragana letter “ひ”. Michelin Green Guide 2 stars. 5 min south of the Peeing Boy by car. Free.
    祖谷川が「ひ」の字に蛇行する絶景展望スポット。ミシュラン・グリーンガイド2つ星。案内板なし・見逃し注意。小便小僧から車で南へ5分。無料。
• Mt. Tsurugi / 剣山 — 75 min (to trailhead). Second highest peak in western Japan (1,955m). Chairlift available (Apr–Nov, ¥1,900 round trip). Broad, gentle summit plateau with 360° views.

• Ryugake Cliff / 龍宮崖 — 45 min. A dramatic suspension footbridge high above Manpu Gorge in Oku-Iya. One of the most thrilling bridges in the area. Free.
  45分。奥祖谷・万符峡の上にかかる高さのある吊り橋。エリア随一のスリル。無料。
• Ryugado Cave / 龍河洞 — 55 min. One of Japan’s three great limestone caves, formed over 175 million years. Total length 4km; the tourist route covers 1km (~40 min). The cave has two extraordinary features beyond the stalactites: a waterfall inside the cave, and the “God’s Jar” — a 2,000-year-old Yayoi pottery vessel that has been slowly encased in limestone over the centuries and is now fused with the cave wall. The cave is also a designated Historic Site, making it unique in Japan. Adventure course available (helmet + headlamp, ~90 min, ¥2,900+, reservation required). Standard course: ¥1,500 adults. Open year-round (8:30–17:00, until 16:30 Nov–Feb).

• Sakuragaoka Park / 桜ヶ丘公園 — 1,100 cherry trees including weeping cherry, double cherry. 30 min north. / しだれ桜・八重桜など1,100本。北に30分。

• Mt. Tsurugi / 剣山 — Peak: early–mid Oct. / 見頃：10月上〜中旬。
• Oku-Iya / 奥祖谷 — Peak: late Oct. / 見頃：10月下旬。
• Oboke & Iyakei / 大歩危・祖谷渓 — Peak: mid–late Nov. Boat tours offer some of the best views.

• Hotel Kazurabashi / ホテルかずら橋 — 30 min. Cable car to sky open-air bath with panoramic mountain views. Day use: ¥1,200 adult (10:30–16:00).

Hidden gem / 穴場

• Matsuogawa Onsen / 松尾川温泉 — 30 min. A tiny one-bath facility on a mountain river. Free-flowing alkaline sulfur spring (pH10.2 — one of Japan’s top alkaline springs), silky water. Day use: ¥550 adult (10:00–20:00, until 18:00 Dec–Mar). Closed Wed & Dec 30–Jan 3.
  ⚠️ Narrow mountain road for the last 20 min — drive carefully.

🏔️ Reihoku Region / 嶺北地域（大豊町・本山町・土佐町・大川村）

The four towns and villages north of Garbanzo House, along the upper Yoshino River. Largely undiscovered, deeply rural.
ガルバンゾハウスの北側、吉野川上流沿いの4町村。ほぼ観光客がいない、本物の田舎。

• Sameura Dam & Lake / 早明浦ダム・さめうら湖 — 30 min. The largest dam in Shikoku and the water supply for all four prefectures of Shikoku — known as “the lifeblood of Shikoku.” The lake seen from above looks like a dragon (the dam card is a cult collector’s item). Canoe and SUP rentals available at the lakeside base. Cafe with lake views.

• Tosa Tenkuu no Sato Terraced Rice Fields / 土佐天空の郷の棚田 — 35 min. Over 2,000 rice paddies cascading down the hillsides of Motoyama Town. The rice grown here — “Tosa Tenkuu no Sato” — won Japan’s top rice award twice. The Oishi Terraced Field viewpoint looks out over a landscape unchanged since the Yayoi period (300 BC–300 AD).

• Okawa Village / 大川村 — 45 min. Japan’s smallest village by population (around 400 people, excluding islands). The original village center sank beneath the Sameura Dam. A cruise on the lake passes over where the old village once stood. Famous for Tosa Akagyu (free-range red cattle) and Tosa Hachikindori chicken. The night sky here is extraordinary.

🍋 Local Food & Souvenirs / 特産品・お土産

Kochi Specialties / 高知の特産品

• Yuzu / ゆず — Kochi produces about half of Japan’s entire yuzu harvest. The mountain climate produces intensely fragrant fruit. Look for: ponzu sauce, yuzu kosho (chili paste), yuzu juice, yuzu sweets, yuzu soap. The brand “Umaji Village / 馬路村” is the most famous.
  高知は日本のゆず生産量の約半分を占める。山間の寒暖差が香り高い実を育てる。ポン酢・柚子胡椒・ゆずジュース・スイーツ・ソープなど加工品が豊富。「馬路村ゆず」が最も有名なブランド。
• Komatsu / 小夏 — Kochi’s signature citrus (also called “niyu summer orange”). Available April–May. The white pith is sweet and edible — peel like an apple and eat with the pith. Refreshingly tart.
  高知を代表する柑橘（日向夏・ニューサマーオレンジとも）。4〜5月が旬。白い甘皮ごとりんごのように剥いて食べるのが高知流。さわやかな酸味。
• Katsuo no Tataki / カツオのたたき — High Kochi’s most iconic dish. Bonito seared over straw fire, sliced thick, served with garlic and ponzu. Best eaten fresh at Hirome Market or the Sunday market in Kochi.
  高知を代表する料理。藁焼きの鰹を厚切りにしてにんにく・ポン酢で食べる。ひろめ市場か日曜市で食べるのが一番。
• Tosa Knives / 土佐打刃物 — 400-year-old craft tradition. Available at the Sunday market and knife shops near Ryugado cave. Kitchen knives to hunting knives.
  400年の伝統工芸。日曜市や龍河洞前の商店街で購入可。包丁から猟刀まで。

Otoyo Local Specialties / 大豊町の特産品

• Goishi-cha / 碁石茶 — Japan’s only double-fermented tea, made only in Otoyo Town. Slightly sour, earthy flavor, rich in lactic acid bacteria. Available at the Osugi Roadside Station.
  日本唯一の二段階発酵茶。大豊町だけで作られる。ほんのり酸味のある独特の風味、乳酸菌たっぷり。道の駅大杉で購入可。
• Ginfu-ro / 銀不老豆 — A rare black-eyed bean grown only in Otoyo Town. Used in roll cakes and mochi. The roll cake was adopted as a JAL first-class in-flight meal.
  大豊町だけで栽培される希少な豆。ロールケーキ・大福に加工される。銀不老ロールケーキはJAL国内線ファーストクラスの機内食に採用された。
• Tachikawa Soba / 立川そば — Local buckwheat noodles made with 100% soba flour (no wheat). Extra thick, slightly crumbly texture. Served at the Osugi Roadside Station.
  100%そば粉の手打ちそば。極太・ボソボソ感がクセになる大豊名物。道の駅大杉の食堂で食べられる。

山間の田舎です。閉店が早く、昼過ぎに売り切れることも。できれば事前に電話確認を。

• 道の駅 大杉 — 15 min by car. Roadside station restaurant with local food: Tachikawa soba (10割そば), boar meat dishes, Goishi-cha set meal. Also sells local produce and souvenirs.
  車15分。立川そば・ジビエ猪肉料理・碁石茶御膳。お土産・地元野菜の販売も。
• ひばり食堂 — 15 min by car (Otoge area / 高須). A legendary diner run by a butcher — the katsudon (pork cutlet rice bowl) is famous throughout Kochi. “Mini” size is what other restaurants call regular. Regular size is enormous. Named after Misora Hibari, who was rescued near here as a child. Arrive early — often sold out by mid-afternoon. ¥900 katsudon. Open 11:00–17:00, no fixed holidays.
  車15分（高須）。精肉店が経営する伝説の食堂。ボリュームカツ丼が高知県民総選挙嶺北エリア1位。ミニ=普通、普通=大盛、大盛=倒れるレベル。美空ひばりさんゆかりの地に由来した店名。昼過ぎに売り切れることも多い。カツ丼¥900、11:00〜17:00、年末年始以外無休。

• 大田口カフェ — 5 min by car. A stylish cafe among Route32 near Otaguchi Station with lunch and desserts.
  車5分。行動３２号線沿い、大田口駅そばのおしゃれなカフェ。ランチ・デザートあり。休火水。
• 永渕食堂 shanti — 10 min by car (Nagabuchi area / 永渕). Vegetable-forward “no-added-water curry” made with only the water content of vegetables. Unusual in the best way. Open 11:00–16:00, closed Wed–Thu.
  車10分（永渕）。野菜の水分だけで作る「無加水カレー」が名物。ノンベジプレートも。11:00〜16:00、水木定休。

🏯 Kochi City / 高知市内観光

About 60 min by car. A half-day trip is easy. / 車で約60分。半日で回れる。

• Kochi Castle / 高知城 — One of Japan’s 12 surviving original castle keeps. The only castle in Japan where both the keep and the lord’s residence remain intact. Views over the city from the top floor. ¥500 adults (9:00–17:00, closed Dec 26–Jan 1).
  現存12天守のひとつ。天守と本丸御殿が両方現存する唯一の城。最上階から市街を一望。大人500円（9:00〜17:00、12/26〜1/1休）。
• Sunday Market / 日曜市 — Sundays only. Japan’s longest-running street market, open since 1690. About 300 stalls stretch 1km along Otesuj avenue in front of the castle. Fresh vegetables, Tosa swords, flowers, pickles, street food. Go in the morning — stalls start packing up after noon. Free to browse.
  日曜のみ開催。1690年から続く日本最古クラスの街路市。高知城前・追手筋の約1kmに300店が並ぶ。野菜・土佐刃物・花・漬物・食べ歩きグルメ。午前中推奨（昼以降に撤収が始まる）。入場無料。
  Open: ~6:00–14:00 (roughly). Closed Jan 1–2 and Aug 10–12 (Yosakoi Festival).
• Katsurahama Beach / 桂浜 — 30 min from central Kochi. A crescent-shaped Pacific beach backed by pine forest. Famous as the “moon-viewing shore” in the Yosakoi folk song. The 13.5m bronze statue of Ryoma Sakamoto looks out to sea from a hilltop above the beach. Free to enter the beach; Ryoma Memorial Museum ¥500 adults (9:00–17:00, open year-round).
  高知中心部から30分。よさこい節で「月の名所は桂浜」と謳われる太平洋の砂浜。丘の上に立つ坂本龍馬像（総高13.5m）が海の彼方を見つめる。砂浜無料入場。龍馬記念館大人500円（9:00〜17:00、年中無休）。
• Hirome Market / ひろめ市場 — Next to the castle. 60+ stalls under one roof. Kochi’s go-to spot for katsuo tataki (seared bonito), local sake, and lunch. Lively any day of the week.
  高知城の隣。屋根付き屋台村に60店超。鰹のたたき・地酒・昼ごはんの定番スポット。週7日にぎわう。

MY遊バス (sightseeing bus): Kochi Station → Hirome/Castle → Katsurahama. Runs daily. Convenient without a car in the city.
